1. Dollar Slice Pizza

Cheese pizza slice from 99 Cent Fresh Pizza in Midtown East
If it’s your first time in NYC and you can only try one food off this list, it needs to be this. A true NYC icon – the $1 slice of cheese pizza!
The dollar slice is perfect when you’re craving something greasy in the middle of the night or if you want to grab something quick while sightseeing the city.
You’d think that $1 pizza would taste like cardboard, but it’s actually pretty darn good! Some places offer 2 slices + drink combo for under $5 which is a great deal.
📍Budget-Friendly Spots:
- 99 Cent Fresh Pizza (Multiple Locations) – this is the classic dollar pizza spot!
- 2 Bros Pizza (Midtown) – in recent years, some locations have increased their prices but still worth checking out!
2. Bagel with Cream Cheese

New York City bagels are out of this world. They’re hand rolled, doughy, and chewy especially when slathered with a generous amount of fresh cream cheese. Once you’ve had a NYC bagel, you can’t go back to ordinary bagels.
Many stores have lots of different bagel and cream cheese flavors you can pick from. My favorite combo is a plain bagel with scallion cream cheese. You can even get the classic BEC sandwich if you want something more filling!
- Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company (Multiple Locations) – highly recommend the Chelsea location!
- Russ & Daughters (Lower East Side)
- Ess-a-Bagel (Midtown)
3. Chopped Cheese Sandwich

I had never heard of a chopped cheese sandwich before coming to NYC! It’s a bodega specialty that’s almost like a chopped up cheeseburger – ground beef, onions, and melted cheese mixed together and chopped up while cooking, then placed on a roll, and topped with lettuce, tomato, and other condiments.
You can stop at any local bodega or corner deli and get one of these for a quick and satisfying lunch.

Hot dogs are another iconic NYC treat that you can’t skip on your visit to NYC! I highly recommend getting a hot dog from one of the many hot dog carts throughout the city! You’ll also find a lot of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog shops and stands, but I don’t think those are as good as the carts.

5. Halal Cart Chicken Over Rice

This is an iconic NYC street food that consists of chicken cooked in Middle Eastern spices & seasonings, and served with seasoned rice, pita, veggies, and a drizzle of white sauce. It tastes absolutely delicious and will keep you full for hours!
There’s many different halal carts throughout the city. Most of them have a similar menu, but prices do vary depending on which part of the city you’re in. Unfortunately, due to inflation, it’s getting harder to find halal cart platters under $10, but it’s still a budget-friendly meal even if it costs a bit more!
